چکیده

Systems of three or more conservation laws in which a conserved quantity is passively transported have a contact eld; sometimes, the contact speed and the speed of one of the nonlinear waves coincide on a surface in state space. We prove that this resonance surface contains the equilibrium points of the contact eld. We construct locally the Riemann solution for an example of such a system of three equations, which arises in ow in petroleum reservoirs. Solutions resulting from the resonating waves give rise to new objects, which we call wave surfaces. The complete Riemann solution is obtained by putting together transversely the wave surface and the remaining non resonant waves. In this example, the contact eld has saddle points, and a new wave appears, a transitional contact wave. In the presence of this new wave, the Riemann solution for the system of three equations possesses four rather than three wave groups.

One-point contact measurement of spherical resonances

Ceramic bearing balls are desirable for use in high-temperature and nonlubricative environments because of their ability to retain high mechanical strength and reduced wear. However, because ceramics are brittle, it is very important to inspect ceramic parts for the existence of small (l-10 pm) surface defects. The contact-contact resonant sphere technique has been shown to be able to detect th...

Single Point Contact Measurements of Mechanical Resonances

In this paper we present a novel technique for measuring the material properties of spherical objects. The technique is also capable of detecting the presence of surface defects in these objects. We excite resonances of spheres at both low and high frequencies. Resonances are generated by forming a one-point Hertzian contact between the sphere and a spherical depression in a buffer rod with a t...

Resonance Ultrasonic Spectroscopy of a Nanofibrous Composite and Studying the Effect of Surface/Interface

Resonances are intrinsic characteristics of an elastic object, which are completely independent of the source of excitation. The appropriate utilization of the information contained within the resonance spectra and the identification of the resonance frequencies of the object can be used as a potent tool for material characterization. In this paper, a new mathematical model for the wave diffrac...

Statistics of Resonances in One Dimensional Continuous Systems

Abstract. We study the average density of resonances (DOR) of a disordered one-dimensional continuous open system. The disordered system is semi-infinite, with white-noise random potential, and it is coupled to the external world by a semi-infinite continuous perfect lead. Our main result is an integral representation for the DOR which involves the probability density function of the logarithmi...

Dual-band, Dynamically Tunable Plasmonic Metamaterial Absorbers Based on Graphene for Terahertz Frequencies

In this paper, a compact plasmonic metamaterial absorber for terahertz frequencies is proposed and simulated. The absorber is based on metamaterial graphene structures, and benefits from dynamically controllable properties of graphene. Through patterning graphene layers, plasmonic resonances are tailored to provide a dual band as well as an improved bandwidth absorption. Unit cell of the design...
